Peter Zirot, my paternal grandfather was born in Wincentow, Poland, Russia. I found his birth record on a film from the FHC “Parish registers for Pultusk, Poland.” His parents were Jon Cyrot (Zierath) and Caroline Neuman. He emigrated to the United States in the early 1900's, but I have not been able to locate the ships’ Passenger list for his arrival in America, In Beaver Falls, he joined his brother Julius and a sister Luisa. In the New York Emigration and Immigration index, I located a Frederick Zieratt going to a brother Peter Zirat in Beaver Falls. Frederick arrived 22 May 1902 on the SS Pennsylvania from Hamburg, so Peter had to have been in the US in 1902. On his Declaration of Intent, Peter states he was bom in Witzendorf, Poland Russia and is described as 5 ft. 4”, brown hair, gray eyes, ruddy complexion, 145 lbs and bald. I have not been able to locate Witzendorf. If the records I found from Pultusk are correct, Peter and Frederick were born in Wincentow, a small village NE of Pultusk.
In December 1906, Peter was reunited with his wife, Pauline Schmidt and two daughters. Alwine, and Anna. Family stories say they didn’t come to America with Peter because the youngest child had chicken pox and was turned away at the port of embarkation. Pauline arrived in New York on the Frederick der Grosse on 5th December 1906. I never found a listing for their daughter Emma.
Peter first worked at the Shovel works in Beaver Falls. I think it was a factory that made farming tools. In 1907, he purchased a house at 215- 16th St. In 1912, be purchased an adjoining lot and house and in 1916, he purchased a 3rd lot and house which he sold to his son-in-law John Betke. In 1916, he sold the remaining property and purchased a farm, about 156 acres in South Beaver Township. Peter became a citizen in [??] My father, Adolph, Zirot was born in 1907 followed by John, 1909, Fritz or Fred, 1911 and Laura in 1913. Pauline died 23 July 1918 during the flu epidemic leaving motherless the children born m America. The older girls were married, Anna had married Julius Gollnick. They had two sons, Julius and Alex and a daughter Annie. Emma married Sigmund Blum. They had 3 sons, Edward, Gus and Albert, and two daughters, Anne and Betty. Alwine married John Betke. Later that same year, 1918, Alwine died leaving 3 children: Margaret, Fritz and My father, Adolph married Susan Jordan in 1930 and had three children: Adolph Jr. 1932, Shirley 1934, and Robert ,1936. John was married and had one or two children. Fritz married and had 2 sons, I think. Laura married, but never had children. ... Peter Zirot (60) married a widow Rosalie Marshall Schinke Detka (65) on 4 April 1923. They lived together on the farm in South Beaver Township for many years. I remember visiting the farm with my parents on Sunday afternoons. Grandfather Peter was a short stern man with a mustache who spoke little English and conversed with my parents in German. Before we could go out to play on a Sunday afternoon, we had to gather around his large kitchen table and listen to him read from the Bible in German!
