4.   The Zirat Family in America.

   A younger brother, Julius Zierat ( 1870) emigrated with his wife, Wilhelmine, daughter, Ottilie(4 1/2) and son William 5 mos old. They arrived in New York Feb. 25, 1899 from Bremen on the HH Meier. The ships’ list stated Julius was a laborer, had $30 and was going to a brother-in-law in New York. Julius also had an older daughter named Wilhelmine, but she was not listed with the group. On the 1900 Census for Beaver Falls, Julius and his family are residing at 1327 First Avenue. He is working as a grinder in an ax factory. Julius states he was married 3 years and they have a child, Anna, born May 1898. On this census living with Julius and his family is a sister . Luise,aged 22. On the 1910 census, Julius and Wilhelmine are listed with a 3 year old named Wilhelmine. Otillie, 17, lives at home and works as a laundress. Juluis’ wife states that she had seven children, only two living. The Grove City cemetery records, New Brighton, PA., lists a baby boy died stillborn, 26, May 1903 and Emma, who died in 1902 of choking. The 1920 Census lists Juluis’ age as 50. He is living at 213 16th St. in Beaver Falls with his daughter Wilhelmine, aged 13, and daughter Ottilie who married Jacob Ristau in 1910. Juluis’ wife died in the flu epidemic in 1918 , Julius died in 1957 and Ottillie died in 1971. I didn't know what happened to Wilhelmine until I contacted an Edward Neuman in Naples, Florida who told me that his mother was Wilhelmine. She had married Edward Neuman in 1926 and there were four boys in the family: Edward 1928, Howard, 1931, Ralph, 1933 and Leonard, 1945. I never located any records in Beaver County for Luise nor did I ever locate naturalization papers for Julius, so I don’t think he ever became a citizen. Nor do I have a physical description of him.
