Advisory

A published account of this family (Richer, 1939) claims that this Peter Noffsinger married Sophronia, widow of Frederick Wise, but apparently offers no sources to back up this claim. Recently, researchers (note: Message Board Discussion) now believe that the wife of this Peter Noffsinger was named "Frances" (also "Preney" and "Frankey" in some records). The Peter Noffsinger thought to be the husband of the Widow Wise is thought to be a different Peter, as this marriage apparently took place in 1796, ruling this Peter out. Additional research may be necessary.

Peter Nofsker emigrated to America in 1749. He sailed on the ship “Phoenix” fromRotterdam and arrived in the port of Philadelphia. It would appear that he wasborn somewhere between 1700 and 1710. He was married to Sophronia Wise in Germany.

He was naturalized in 1771 at Baltimore. After landing in Philadelphia, Petersettled in Berwick Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The land was in LancasterCounty from 1729 to 1749, in York County from 1749 to 1800 and today, part of theland is found in Adams County and part in York County, Pennsylvania.Apparently, Peter lived his entire life in Berwick township and died in 1783. He isprobably buried somewhere in that area although several searches for the burialsite by the publisher have failed to locate the exact site.According to the records of Mrs. B. J. Hundley of Reston, Virginia, his childrenare Peter, Jacob, David, John, Samuel, Daniel, Joseph, and Hannah. There may havebeen other children but the above named children are to be found in Virginiacourthouse records. Some may have remained behind although later York Countyrecords do not seemed to indicate this fact. However, Virginia courthouse recordswould seemed to indicate that the migration of Peter’s family began just a fewyears after his death and continued until 1800.One son of Peter; SAMUEL bought land in Botetourt County, Virginia from 1788 to1824. He appeared in the 1810 Census with a family of six children. The 1820Census would seemed to indicate a family of five sons and three daughters. By 1830Census, it would appear that only two daughters remained at home and the rest hadmoved from home. Samuel died in 1839. His children: Elizabeth Bilbro, Mary Nace,Polly Nace, Isaac, Abraham, Sally and Sarah.

    - Note: it is disputed by other researchers that Peter Noffsinger married Sophronia Wise, additional research/sources needed.

Peter Noffsinger (Nofsker), No. 3, evidently went into Virginia from Lancaster County, Pa., about 1760, or before 1770, the records show, he was the owner of several thousand acres of land in West Augusta County. This county was later divided, and Botetourt County was formed, which is still the home of many descendants of this land owner.
