When Peter and family were aboard the "Duff" - Frenchmen from the ship Le Grande Beonaparie siezed the "Duff" and the men were taken to Monte Video where the "Duff" was sold. Wives & children again united. History of the Missionary Society.

Peter's father died at 8 and he went to board with a Mr & Mrs Monets who taught him French. At the age of 13 he went to sea and later when war broke out between England and America Peter was sent to Long Island on the 'Augusta'. During that action the boat caught fire and Peter, confined to bed, couldn't escape and fortunately for him a young shipmate rescued him. - The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle Sept 1823 Memoir of the late Peter Levesque page 358.
