Obituary, Middleburgh paper: Peter Hartman was born January 13, 1837 in Centre township, Union County, now Snyder County, Pa., and died November 30, 1914. He was the son of George Hartman and his wife, Susanna Reish. For twelve years, he lived with his grandparents, Peter Reish and wife. After three months free school and 10 months subscription school, with only the ability to use the German language, [garbled] on a trip to Lockport [garbled] County, N.Y., in 1849. D. N. Pogar wrote his name on a card and he walked to Williamsport. While traveling in White Deer mountains, he became lost and he walked to Williamsport. The next day he reached Williamsport and it was at the hotel he stopped that he first gave his name as Hartman. Owing to the fact that he was raised by his grandparents, he carriered their with [garbled]. From Williamsport to Elmira, the trip was made by stage and from there to Lockport on the steam cars and this was the first time he saw a steam engine. Here he engaged to work on a farm at a salary of $4.00 a month. The Yankees could not speak German, so he began to study the English language and studied both English and German, until he was able to read and write in both languages. He remained in New York state until 1854, when he returned to Centreville and was employed by Jerry Kleckner in a store. In 1856 [?] he began to clerk for Hon. Ner Middleswarth at Port Ann, in the store of Middleswarth, Smith and Co. June 30, 1858 he was marred to Barbara Ellen Showers in August of the same year, he and his young bride full of hope and promise, embarked for St. Clair County, Michigan, where he had pre-empted a quarter section of land and held a deed signed by President Franklin Pierce. While in Michigan, he worked for Harbuck and Co. of Baltimore, culling pipe [garbled], but in August, 1860, there was such a [garbled] frozen and they decided to come back to good old Pennsylvania. He located in Smoketown, Union County, and was elected constable of East Buffalo Township before he had a right to vote there. He was employed by David Ream at the carpenter trade and helped in the erection of Driesbach church and many other buildings in Buffalo valley. In 1862, he was employed to clerk for the firm of Weidensaul and Spigelmeyer at Centerville, and continued until 1868, when Valentine Walter and Mr. Hartman bought the store and formed a partnership. In 1871, the store was sold to Mr. Walter and George W. Showers. He served as revenue collector and two terms a school director. For a number of years, he was proprietor of the Centerville Hotel, but in 1905 the hotel was sold to W. A. Napp. His wife died June 5, 1905. They reared six children, four boys and two girls: E. B. Hartman, Selinsgrove, Peter Hartman, Tenn., Schyler H. deceased, Melvin Hartman, Mrs. L.A. Stine, Centerville, and Mrs. L.C. Bingaman, Lewistown. Mr. Hartman was a member of the Lutheran church and had the distinction of being the oldest Mason in the Middleburgh Lodge. Funeral Thursday at 1:30 P.M. at Penn’s Creek.
