Need to look up Ross County Case # 2609, John Goodman, son of George. A John Goodman, and a Johann Andreas Gutman, arrived together in 1743 from Germany or Switzerland. (30,000 Names of German, Swiss Immigrants to PA, pg. 162 - 161?) A Jacob Goodman, and a Phillip Goodman, arrived together on Sept. 15, 1749, on the ship "Edinburgh," James Russel, Master, from Rotterdam, last from Portsmouth - 380 passengers. (30,000 Names of German, Swiss Immigrants to PA, pg. 201-202.) A Christian Goodman, of Northampton Co., was naturalized 25th of March, 1761. A Stephen Goodman of Lower Merrion Twp., Philadelphia Co., was naturalized in 1763. (Persons Naturalized in Pennsylvania, pg. 60 & 90.) A Jacob Goodman, son of Peter and Catharine Goodman, was born 06 Jul 1784; baptized July 18th at the First Reformed Church at Lancaster, PA. (Pennsylvania-German Society, pg. 298.) A Peter Goodman who lived at Adelphi was an immigrant. (SOURCE?) In the book, "Pioneer Record of Ross County", Colerain Twp., a Peter Goodman is mentioned as a great stock dealer. There are only two land transactions in Ross County for Joseph Goodman. One is where he sells a tract that was part of the "homestead of Peter Goodman". That was the first clue to his father's name. This deed also mentions Partition Record Vol. 13, pg. 1 - ___, filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Ross County. Peter Goodman died 16 Sep 1846. His executors were assigned by the Probate Court of Ross County on 26 Oct 1846, as Kellion H. Dunkle, Joseph Defenbaugh, and Peter Lance. Kellion Dunkle was administrator. His heirs signed a release saying they declined to be administrator and that the selection of Kellion Dunkle was approved by them. The heirs who signed were: his wife, Elizabeth, his sons John, Peter and Joseph Goodman. Appraisers of the estate were Peter Dumm, Wm. Huntzinger, and Thomas Drake. There are several deed transactions in Ross County for Peter Goodman. He first bought land in Ross County in 1810. He sold a tract of land in 1811. The estate of Peter Goodman: Kellion H. Dunkle, administrator, also signing as witness, and securities, Joseph Defenbaugh and Peter Lance. Dear Sylvia:

First let me say that your energy astounds me! We are all blessed to be a part of the same family lines you are! Thank you.

2nd, a short question: Are there christening records for the First Reformed Church? Specifically during the time period 1793 - 1815 when Rev. Pauli was there? If so, are there christenings listed for children of Peter Gutman / Guthman and his wife Betsy (Elizabeth?) Nagel? (I'll gladly wait my turn - it sounds like you've become swamped with requests.)

3rd, a longer explanation. I am one of the Goodman researchers who believes my Goodman family came from the Berks Co. area (which Larry mentioned). Mine settled in Ross Co., OH by 1817. This is a brief outline of the information I have found on them:

Peter GOODMAN, b. 25 Jul 1771, Pennsylvania(?), d. 16 Sep 1846, Colerain Twp., Ross Co., OH (He signed his name GUTHMAN on early deeds in Ross Co.) md. Elizabeth _____________, b. 16 Feb 1776, Pennsylvania (?), d. 27 Jan 1857, Colerain Twp., Ross Co., OH

Children: Catharine, b. ca 1796/97 in PA, md. Joseph Defenbaugh Peter Jr., b. ca 1805 in PA, md. Anna ? John, b. 25 May 1806 in Berks Co., PA, md. Sarah Weaver Henry, b. ca 1815, possibly born in PA - maybe OH Joseph, b. 13 Nov 1817 in Ross Co., OH These children were living at the time of their father's death in 1846, and are mentioned in a partition record in Ross Co.

Their son, Joseph, was my gg grandfather. Joseph GOODMAN, b. 13 Nov 1817, Ross Co., OH, d. 19 Oct 1876, Adelphi, Ross Co., OH md. 03 Jun 1838, Ross Co., OH Leah STRAWSER, b. 06 Jul 1814, Ross Co., OH, d. 08 Apr 1901, Adelphi, Ross Co., OH

As you can see the first three children of my Peter and Elizabeth Goodman reported on census records that they were born in PA, and John's obituary reported that he was born in Berks Co., PA. IF there are christening records for these three (and possibly more?) children in the Reformed Church at Reading, I do believe you've uncovered Peter's roots for me.

I can't find the information right now, but I believe the Census records for 1800 and 1810 in Reading, PA, list two Peter Guthman / Goodman - an elder one and a younger one (whose age matches my Peter Sr.). The 1820 Census doesn't list the younger Peter - which points to a possibility that this is my Peter who had moved to Ohio by 1820. (I believe the older Peter is missing from the 1820 census also).

In searching for parents and siblings of Peter Sr., I have collected quite a bit of information on the famiy of George Goodman and his wife, Catharine Cougar / Gougar (she was kidnapped by the Indians and lived with them for many years). My Peter Goodman moved to the same township (Greene) in Ross Co. that children of George Goodman moved to...and there are reported to be more children of George that haven't all been identified. Also, at the estate sale of my Peter Goodman, many items were purchased by sons and grandsons of George Goodman...which HINTS at a relationship.

Thank you for your help, Sylvia. Rachel Meyer (also on your Strasser list)
