Peter may have been born in 1727 in Amelia County, Virginia.

On March 16, 1749, in Amelia County, Virginia, Peter bought 200 acres of land for 20 pounds from Samuel Cobbs during the reign of George II of England [Book 5, pg. 1].

In 1752-1753 in Amelia County, Virginia, tithables in Nottoway Parish. Peter was the surety for the marriage of Archibald McElroy and Ann Aston, who was married with the consent of her fathr, William Aston, on August 7, 1756 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

In the will of William Aston, written in 1767, his heirs are listed and among them is Peter Downey.

On December 15, 1766, Peter Downey of Prince Edward County, Virginia, sold the 200 acres which he bought in 1749 for 30 pounds (Margaret being privately examined relinquished her right of dower to the lands) [Prince Edward County, Virginia, Book 3, pg. 189]

On December 15, 1775, Peter Downey received a grant for 400 acres on the Reddy Fork of the Kaw River in Guilford County, North Carolina [Book 2, pg. 8, State Grant]

Peter sold the land in 1785 to John Pelty of Surry County,North Carolina, for $300 [Guilford County, North Carolina, Book 3, pg. 214]

In 1783, Peter of Guilford County, North Carolina, bought 198 acres on Pipes Creek for 100 pounds from John Pipes [Surry County, North Carolina, Book C, pg. 453]

On December 1, 1791, Peter sold 148 acres of Pipes Creek on the south side of Yadkin River to William Cook, Jr. for 200 pounds. Peter's son James witnessed this deed [Surry County, North Carolina, Book E, pg. 175].

In 1803, Peter died owning 100 acres of land.

Peter is too old to serve in the Revolutionary War, but he is recognized by the DAR as a Patriot. The State of North Carolina, Volume IX, pg. 5, Folio 3, issued to Peter Downey an account of certificates for the amount of the principal of 8 pounds, 18 shillings and 4 pence delivered into the Treasurer's office and exchanged pursuant to Act of Assembly passed in 1789.

In 1803, Surry County, North Carolina, August Superior Court granted James and Samuel Downey an administration of Peter's estate, and a bond of 300 pounds was posted.

One final note about Peter Downey was from Claims Filed in the Public Record Office, London: Thomas Yeuille, James Murdock and Co. vs. Peter Downey, Halifax Store "Peter Downey is dead and all his family is gone to Kentucky."

During the Revolutionary War, Peter lived in Orange County, North Carolina. He was a Revolutionary Soldier on the Continental Line in North Carolina. As a Patriot, he received payment for services rendered [Volume IX, pg. 5, Folio 3] "Revolutionary Army Accounts"
