Facts and Events
PAULINE AGNES NEWTON (1905-1984) By Myron L. Newton, Jr. Pauline Agnes Newton was born November 9, 1905, the only child of William and Kate Bushnell Newton. She was born in New York State and there is no reason to believe that it wasn’t in the Village of Little Valley, Cattaraugus County where her parents lived. The 1910 and 1920 U.S. New York Censuses enumerated Pauline with her parents on Eighth Street in Little Valley. This house, believed to be on the northwest corner of Eighth and Center Streets, would be the only home she knew while she resided in the Village. Pauline was age 14 in 1920 and a few years later probably graduated from Little Valley High School. In 1930 Pauline was in the middle of a short-lived and unsuccessful marriage to Anthony Minavio, a local orchestra musician who previously lived in Salamanca and Buffalo, New York. The U.S. Census for that year enumerated the couple residing with Will and Kate in Little Valley. Later Pauline took back the Newton surname. After 1930 there is a lack of information on her exact whereabouts but she may have been teaching and living in the Little Valley area for the next 20 years. Eventually she relocated to the Baltimore, Maryland area to teach. this move must have occurred after 1951 since according to the Social Security Death Index her SSN was issued in New York State prior to 1951. The 1955 obituary of her mother noted that Pauline still resided at the family home in Little Valley. In 1956 Will sent Pauline a postcard to an address in Springville, New York, so perhaps she was teaching there at the time. Her father’s obituary noted that she and William resided in Maryland since August 1957. The cities mention in Will and Pauline’s obituaries suggest she taught in the Anne Arundel County School system or the Baltimore County School System. Numerous photographs of Pauline survive when she was young, some when she was a teenager, but none have been found of her as an adult. Most of these photos were taken by her father who was an accomplished photographer. Some of these show Pauline accompanying him fishing excursions or nature hikes. It also appeared that both Pauline and her mother traveled by car with Will on his business trips to Northeastern New York State and Vermont. According to Pauline Agnes Newton’s obituary she was a resident of Catonsville, Maryland when she died at age 79 on November 4, 1984. A funeral service was held prior to her burial in Newton family plot of the Little Valley Rural Cemetery in Little Valley, New York.
