Physical Description and Medical History
From his WWII service records (at age 37), he was described as brown hair, hazel eyes, 5'10", 205 pounds, "a well developed man, rather overweight and apparently intelligent." Vision and hearing perfect, lungs and heart good. Tattoo on right arm, vaccination scar on left, appendectomy scar. He had an appendectomy in New York in 1922, and suffered a left-side hernia in 1939 after lifting a piano, which was successfully operated on. The previous operations were noted in a medical history for a right-side hernia operation he had in 1942 while in military service.[5]
Education
Paul completed high school. He did not attend college, but took a two-year business course in Accounting at the Pace Institute in New York City.[5]
Military Service
From Oct 1925 - Oct 1928, he served in the 102nd Cavalry, New Jersey National Guard.[5]
In Nov 1941, eager to volunteer for the war effort, he went to Montreal to enlist in the Royal Canadian Artillery. After basic training in Huntingdon, Quebec, and gunnery training in Petawawa, Ontario, he shipped over to England in June 1942. He spent two years in England, mostly with the 3rd Medium Regiment, where he trained initially as an artillery storeman / clerk, and later as a meteorological observer. (The operation of weather balloons and other meteorological observations were critical to artillery operations, and were taken several times a day as close as possible to the gun locations.) In July 1944, he shipped to France where he served with the 18th and later 22nd Meteorological Sections through the end of the war in Europe. He was discharged in Oct 1945, with the rank of bombardier (the artillery equivalent of corporal), having earned the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the War Medal (1939-45).[5]
