Patrick Connolly was a priest of the Diocese of Newark, New Jersey and then, after the split, the Diocese of Trenton. He was ordained on 3 June 1871. A book in Newark Abbey Library [Bouvier, J.B. Institutiones Theologicae ad usum seminariorum. Paris 1865] carries the inscription: "Ex libris/Patk Connolly/Seton Hall/1868". Father Thomas McEnery, son of Patrick's sister Bridget, gave his library, containing many of his uncle’s books, to St. Mary’s Abbey (now Newark Abbey), Newark.

According to an obituary in an unnamed paper, he died of bronchial pneumonia at 2:34 p.m. “He was without a superior in New Jersey as a preacher and was much sought after to deliver sermons in this section of the diocese.” Regarding his education it goes on to say: “His early training in public schools was supplemented by a course in St. Mary's Abbey, Wilmington, Delaware, where he evinced a talent and an adaptation to the priesthood.” The reference to St. Mary's Abbey, Delaware is apparently mistaken. There was a St. Mary’s College there, but it does not seem to be connected to St. Mary's Abbey, Newark, although there was a parish staffed by the monks of St. Mary's in Delaware. After a three-year course there he went to St. Charles College, Maryland, for the classical course, and Seton Hall for seminary. He was ordained 3 June 1871.

His first assignment was to St. Paul’s, Burlington (1871), then Immaculate Conception, Camden (1871-1873), then St. John’s, Lambertville (1873-1876), 1876 made Pastor of St. Mary’s, Bordentown, September 1897 to 1915 Sts. Philip and James, Bordentown. Made Dean of Warren, Hunterdon and Sussex Counties in 1904. Made Monsignor 1907. He was a member of C.B.L., and Warren Council, No. 473, K of C.

He was made dean, or "Vicar Forane" of Hunterdon, Warren and Somerset Counties.S3.
