Pat and Elizabeth Carmichael lived in Newberry County, South Carolina. Pat served int he rev olutionary war, was wounded-- lost an arm. Pat was a Presbyterian. HIs barn was used for ser vices until a church could be built. He never saw the building finished, he was killed when he was throw n from a mule. Coweta County Chronicles c. 1928 by Mary G. Jones and Lily Reynolds lists birth as 1754. "P atrick Carmical, progenitor of the Carmical family in Coweta, was born in Ireland in 1754 an d came to America about 1765-1770, settling in Newberry, S.C.; marrying Eliabeth Thompson, born in Ire land 1749, came to Amberica about 1770 who like himself was a member of the Associate Reforme d Presbyterian church. Tombstone at Prosperity Cemetery, Prosperity, SC - "Memta Memore Preparefor death ane follow me. Here lyeth the body of Patrick Carmical whodeparted this life the 24th day of Nov. 1802, age 48 years - What I sayunto you I say unto all".

Patrick Carmical was the g-grandfather of Mary Ann Washington Speer's husband Patrick Carmichael. Mary was d. of Joseph Speer & Elizabeth Ann Riggins. Joseph was s. of John Speer & Mercy Harris. Some say that Patrick was thrown from a mule and killed on Dec. 11,1802. Pat and Elizabeth are buried in Prosperity Cemetery on the edge of town at Prosperity, SC.

Pat and Elizabeth were Presbyterians, belonging to the AssociatedReformed Presbyterian Church. At first they worshiped in the log barn ofPat's until a Church could be built in 1802. The Caroline Presbytery wasorganized Feb. 24, 1790, after Pat's war service in VA in 1779-80. Patdid not get to enjoy their Church building as he died the year it wasbuilt, however it was in their new Church that their pledges to God wererenewed and their lives promised to His service and with God's help theywould have America a free country; a country that loved and worshipedGod. The descendants of these first settlers are still called upon tofight to keep this country free so all may worship as they see best.Elizabeth's brother Daniel fought in the Virginia Line in the Revolutionalso.

Pat's barn was near Boyd's Crossing, between Newberry and Prosperity,SC. The emigrants came at different times from 1763, 1767, 1770 and1772, etc. The Annals of Newberry County, by O'Neal, memtions theCarmichaels on pages 676, 675, and 679. Prosperity is about 7 miles fromNewberry and with a small pop. in 1962. The Prosperity A.R.P. Church wasorganized by Thomas Clark in 1802.

WAR: Pat served in the Virginia Line in the American Revolution.According to tradition, Pat served as a Private with the Virginia Troopsand was wounded in the arm and was said to have lost that arm.

"Patrick Carmichael, Pvt., Jan 29, 1779 to July 13, 1780, served 17months and 13 days and at 6-2/3 dollars per month. Total 3L-17S.Discharged. He was in Capt. Jessee Evans' Co. of Inf., of theIllinois-Virginia Regt. commanded by Lt. Col John Montgomery from the29th of Dec., 1778 until the men's time was expired. No. L.1579:2-5-3/5. Payroll of Dec. 1778 to July 1780."

We do not know who Pat's parents were or if they came to America or not.Some think he was the son of William Carmichael who was in NJ and MD andthe brother of william who was sent back to Ireland to be educated andwas the first US Ambassador to Spain, but we have no proof as to whoPat's parents were. Tradition has it that there was a younger brotherwho came later to SC after Pat's death. Another tradition is that therewere 7 brothers who came to America.

Patrick's name is spelled Carmichael on p. 674 of Annals of Newberry Co.,SC v.1, while it is spelled Carmichell on p. 32 of "A Comilation of theOriginal List of Immigrants to SC". A number of his decendants spell itCarmical.

Robert Carmichael arrived in America under the "Bounty Act" as aProtestant immigrant - he petitioned for 100 A. Aug. 7, 1764 inBoonsborough, Delfast Township - SC.
