At six years old, he lost his hearing and speech as the result of scarlet fever and diptheria. (Note: The antitoxin treatment for diptheria was developed in 1891 by Emil von Behring of Berlin, 8 years after Oscan had contracted the disease.)

Oscar had a talent for drawing and became an art student in the Royal China Factory in Berlin. One of the cups painted by him was in the possession of the Kramm family as of 1941.
