Civil War: Company A, 69th Ohio Infantry

Ormond Pinkerton Paulding was born in Damascus, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He was the son of Dr. Joseph G. Paulding and Mary Barnett. His parents returned with him to the United States in 1856. In 1860, Ormond was living with his parents and siblings at Mason, Warren County, Ohio (US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company A, 69th Ohio Infantry, on February 26, 1864. Private Paulding was mustered out on July 17, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. After the war Ormond attended the College of Medicine, University of Michigan, graduating in 1875. He then opened a practice at Arrowsmith, Illinois, where he married Flora B. Sackett about 1879 or early 1880. They remained at Arrowsmith for the next three years (1880 US Census). Sometime soon after the birth of their first child, Ormonde, at Arrowsmith on June 3, 1883, he took his family to California, where he opened a medical practice at Arroyo Grande in San Luis Obispo County. He registered to vote there on March 13, 1884 (SLO Great Register). Ormond, Flora, and "Ormie" were still living at Arroyo Grande when the twins were born on August 28, 1887. The Paulding family moved to nearby Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County in 1892. Ormond purchased a house at 117 W. Cook Street where the family lived for many years (1910, 1920 US Census). By 1930 the family was living at 119 S. Lincoln in Santa Maria (US Census). Ormond was still living there when he died. Ormond was the last surviving member of Santa Maria's Admiral Foote Post, No. 89, Grand Army of the Republic.
