Apparently it was not uncommon for two living children in the same family to have the same name because of the naming conventions of the time, in which the oldest children in a family were named after their grandparents and the younger after their great-grandparents[4]. Presumably the children had nicknames to differentiate them.

Søren Sørensen, 34, født i Bjellands Prgj., Gaardbr Selveier [farmer and farm owner]
Kone [wife]: Ranni Olsdatter, 21, født i Bjellands Prgj.
deres Datter: Gunvor Sørensdatter, 1, født i Bjellands Prgj.
[his mother]: Gunvor Sørensdatter, 64, født i Nordre Undals Prgj., e [widow], Foderaadskone [woman with retirement agreement]
[his brother]: Ole Sørensen, 30, født i Bjellands Prgj., ug [unmarried], Handelsmand [merchant]
Inderste: [lodger]: Berte Olsdatter, 47, født i Bjellands Prgj., ug [unmarried]

It is possible that the lodger is Søren's aunt (the sister of his father), who was born in 1819, and thus would have been 47 in 1866.

Note that the farm name (vestre Svindal) appears to be an error. The couple is identified as being of østre Svindal in the baptism records of their children born immediately before and after this census. The farm name østre Svindal does not appear in the transcribed records of this census, so it seems likely that the records from østre Svindal were unintentionally combined with the records from vestre Svindal and transcribed with the latter farm name.

Note that this census was actually taken in 1866.

  4. Neil Hofland's NEWBIE NOTES, Karla Mattila Neil Hofland online (www.rootsweb.com/~norway/NewbieNotes.htm), acc.

'These conventions [naming children after grandparents and great-grandparents] lead to instances where 2 or more living children in the same family could have the same first name. For example, if both Kristoffer and Kari had fathers named Ole, it was likely that they would have 2 children named Ole. There is one instance in Årdal with 4 living Oles in the same family.'
