She [Nora] died in 1955 when I was twelve years old. My earliest recollections is visiting her at an apartment in Mason, Michigan to which she had relocated following the death of Grandpa Harkness in 1935. I was struck by her scent. To the day of her death she smelled so sweet.

My most vivid memories are of the last few years of Grandma Harkness' life when she was confined to bed in a nursing home in Mason following a debilitating stroke. She was only able to say "yes," "no," and "she says," the most obvious impact of the illness being on her ability to speak. In her excitment upon the arrival of family visitors, she would repeat "she says" over and over in rapid succession as she reached forward for hugs. Some family members say she was also able to sing the words to old-time hymns, but I never heard her do it myself.

...Taught in the rural schools of Ingham County, Michigan prior to her marriage.
