Nicholas grew up near Winchester, Virginia. In 1789, at the age of 26, he left the Shenandoah Valley and patented 255 acres of land in North Union Township (Then Readstone Township), Fayette County, Pennsylvania. There he cleared a farm and lived there the rest of his life.
