Facts and Events
Nicholas Rosenberger was a farmer & stock raiser in Sect. 24, Iowa Co., la. He was one of the settlers spoken of as coming out & forming what is known as the OH settlement. While some from this settlement returned to OH on account of the depredations of the barn-burners, Nicholas remained & defended his property & home. He & his brother built the first & at that time the only cabin between Marengo & Millersburg, Iowa. His house was nothing but a shanty & many times after retiring he could hear the wolves about his house, attracted by fresh meat on the inside.; He had endured all the hardships & inconveniences of settling a new country, being obliged to go to Iowa City to do most of his trading & all of his milling. While he was not a frontiersman, yet he had sufficient determination & courage to declare his rights & defend them; he was one of the many law abiding early settlers who opposed the actions of the barn-burners & rendered the climate unhealthy for them. It was at his house where a number of the settlers met & determined to hold a public meeting in Marengo, at which time the settlers met & determined emphatic resolutions in regard to the barn-burners & threatening retaliation on some of the principal ones who were present, they concluded that discretion the better part of valor & quit their infamous business. |
