Anthony was a farmer & stock-raiser, Sec. 13, Iowa Co., Iowa., He was among the early settlers of Iowa Co., coming from Seneca Co., OH & helping to farm what is known as the OH settlement. He was brought up to labor on the farm & was educated in common schools of that time, log school houses, having large fireplaces in one end, slabs with wooden pins for legs & seats & greased paper for windows. A large board around the outside wall for a writing place for all, forming quite a contrast to the beautiful schools of today. In 1851, he removed to Iowa, But his family was greatly dissatisfied with the country owing to the fact that barn-burners were causing trouble with the settlers & he was induced by his family to return to OH, where they remained about two years & then in 1853, they returned to Iowa & settled on a Farm. The country was still new & they had to endure all the inconveniences & hardships incident to the settlement of a new country. The first house he built or owned was a hewed log house, he had a fine farm consisting of 200 acres of choice land, 40 of which was fine timber, his house was situated of what is known as the old State road on which the stage coaches traveled in those day, which made the settlers life tolerable, as they made a considerable revenue from the sale of watermelons to the passengers of these coaches, in this way they were able to accumulate enough money to pay their taxes as the paper money of these days would not pay taxes
