Nicholas came with his family in 1839 from Kingdom of Hanover, now part of Germany, to America. He initially settled near Cumberland, MD. He later moved to the St. Joseph's German Settlement, near Kingwood in 1840. In 1841, he bought 201 acres of land from William G. Brown, Sr. He built a log home on this land. He was the first person to be buried in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Howesville.
