- Nelson Ashurst was a road surveyor. Anderson County court records that Nelson was paid on July 12,1830 for his road survey work. In 1832 or 1833 Nelson Ashurst
along with his cousin, John N. Ashurst moved from Tennessse to Menard Co., Ill. They moved to Mason Co., Ill about one year later. Nelson, John and their respective families were among the first settlers in Mason Co.,Ill. At the first meeting of the Mason Court in Havana, Illinois, in 1841, Nelson was appointed as the first supervisor in the seventh district of Kilbourne Township. Nelson was also a farmer and livestock dealer in Mason County. On Feb.1,1848,Nelson and his wife, Jemima, gave 5 acres of land to the Trustees of Schools of Township 20,Range 8, for the of the inhabitants. The school was named "Ashurst School". Nelson Ashurst died of cholera on July 28,1850 in Bath, Mason Co., Ill. He was buried in the Ashurst Cemetery which was located on their land. - Nelson R.
