From his grandaughter, Alberta Pierce Barker’s obituary: Her maternal grandfather, Nathaniel McTucker, of Scotch decent, came to California in 1849. He crossed the plains with a band of fine horses and settled in the former town of Elliot, that used to be at the intersection of Liberty and Elliot Roads. He married Ione Watson, who grew up in Illinois. She often talked about her family's friendship with Abraham Lincoln. McTucker Drive on the west side of Galt was named in memory of this pioneer family.

Nathaniel married Ione Watson (no relation to the Jon Watsons of Barry) in Pike County on 4 Feb 1868, Vol 1 page 142, license 301. Clearly there was visiting between the California and the Illinois branches of the family.

Cannot find him in the 1850 census. If he was on the trail, he probably wasn’t counted by any enumerator.
