- Middlesex Probate, case 13598, contains the power and attorney of "John Langley" of Charlestown, dated 16 Jul 1697 and acknowledged in person the same day, being bound out on the Brigatine Mary, bequeathing to his wife Mary, as well as giving, immediate control over his entire estate, with no allowance for, or mention of, children. The oaths of the witnesses are documented on the back, 5 Apr 1701, referring to "the subscriber John Longly Deced".
Source:Wyman, Thomas Bellows. Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1629-1818, p. 598, lists this power of attorney as belonging to the father of Nathaniel Langley b. 2 Apr 1702. If he was deceased 5 Apr 1701 as the witnesses oaths indicate, this is impossible.
Source:Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700 lists two pertinent marriages: John Langly & Mary Adams (int.) 1695, and John Longley, mariner, and Mary "[?Wiswall]" "by 1697". However, the source cited, NEHGR, p. 40:60, is an article showing Mary Wiswall marrying with no date specified Nathaniel Longley, not John. (The other source, Middlesex Deeds, no specific number, presumably refers to p. 12:84, where the above mentioned power of attorney was recorded.) That Mary Wiswall married Nathaniel Longley apparently originates with Jackson's History of Newton, p. 361, but is doubtful. There is no record, and no mention of Mary or any heirs is found in an agreement of heirs. Nathaniel Longley m. 1699 Anna Shepherd who survived him, so if he did marry Mary Wiswall, she was dead by then.
Nathaniel and Ann Langley named a daughter Mary Adams Langley, suggesting he is at least the son of Mary (Adams) Langley. More research is needed to straighten out this confusion.
