From the Preface to the 1880 Edition

The printing of this Record was begun in 1869. During ten years portions, not always consecutive but including much of its first century, appeared in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, the publishers of which, by their valuable cooperation, secured a wide presentation of what relates to perhaps the most interesting period.

The present volume contains the Record extant to 1789, including about thirty per cent additional matter. The end proposed by the writer has been attained. If the original manuscript should, by disaster, perish, the type will show what it did, or did not, contain. This end, and the amount of time, labor and eyesight expended, must excuse the execution of an original intention to make a larger annotation, considerable material for which may appear in a work of a bibliographical nature that will, with this and one other volume, form the writer's contribution to the Literature of Charlestown for the year that includes its two hundred and fiftieth birthday.
