Hi Jim,

My second cousin, Sally Brown, had told me she once was in contact with someone who descended from the Anna Bruce/Moses Elliott Kerr marriage. Anna and Moses had one daughter, Sarah Bruce Kerr. Sally's daughter, Susan, finally found who the contact was and sent me your name and e-mail address.

Moses Elliott Kerr was my gggrandfather. His son, James Vawter Kerr, from his second marriage to Rosa Belle Powell was my ggrandfather. James's daughter, Vida Kerr (Davis) was my grandmother.

A couple years ago I discovered that Moses Elliott Kerr had been married to Anna Bruce prior to his marriage to Rosa Belle Powell and I have been trying to contact anyone who might have any knowledge of the Bruce line. I have loads of data and some photos from the Kerr line and would be more than glad to share it with you if you are interested. I also have quite a lot of data from the Powell line as well.

I would be very pleased to hear from you regarding your Bruce ancestors. All I know is what I have related above.

Thanking you in advance.

Hi Jim,

I really think we have a match!!!!!! You sent me a list of names with your line and my line on it, is this what your asking about? I sent a copy of that letter to Susan, it has your e-mail address on it, I hope you don't care. When she gets settle in Oklahoma she will send the information. If you have more on the Kerr's, yes I would like to have it. I found some cens stuff, just last names and numbers on the Kerr's. It show them in Wythe Co., Va., in 1840-Kerr 80---1850-Kerr 311B. It started with 1810 and the Kerr's didn't show up on the census until 1840. They may have move to Wythe after the census was taken 1830. Oh, yes 1850 was as far as they went. Did you get the information on Anna Bruce, was that too much information? Me, I can never get euogh information. I wont to know the littles thing about them. I always ACES any kind of history in my good ole school days.

I have to run, and get ready for work. Hope to talk to you again. Take care and write soon, Vickie

Here is some of the info I have. I hope you can open the attached file. If not, let me know and I will come up with a different way to get that info to you. The stuff on the underground railroad was about a different grandfather, so it is incorrect. Moses was a Methodist circuit rider in Princeton, West Virginia and he was a clerk in the office where they record deeds and wills and land grants. He moved to Pendleton, Ind in 1850. My link is through their second child, James Vawter Kerr to Raymond Kerr to Sara Jane Kerr Brown ( my mother). Polly Vawter Kerr is also buried in Grove Lawn Cemetary. A Sarah B. Kerr lived with them in 1850. She was 17 years old. Polly was very opposed to slavery and so outspoken about that they had to move from West Virginia to a "free state" in 1850. Polly lived with Elizabeth and John Haas in 1880 (I am trying to find out if that is a relative on my husband's side of the family!) after Moses died. She sold the farm to her son James Vawter Kerr. James and his wife lived there until 1901 when they sold it. James had lived there 50 years. It was 160 acres and located 2 miles Northwest of Pendleton. It was originally bought from the government for $1.25 per acre. Willis Littler owned it in 1953.

I have a lot of info about Polly Vawters parents and on back to England if you are interested in that.

Moses Elliott Kerr is buried in Grove Lawn Cemetary in Pendleton, Indiana. On his tombstone is says: "Blessed are the dead that discipled the Lord." Additional information on their children: Margaret Anne married Ira D. Coty on 16 Mar 1865. She died 9 Oct 1865 James Vawter married Rosa Belle Powell on Dec 31, 1876, she was his second wife (of 3) All three wives were cousins. Elizabeth Jane married John G. Haas on 30 Aug, 1876. She died 16 Aug 1887; John died 24 Aug 1912 William Elliott died of Typhoid on Feb 12, 1868, age 19yrs, 9mo,9days. Never married. Clara Isabell married Milton Hirshberger on 30 Augus 1876 (same day as sister Elizabeth) She died 16 Aug 1887

I have more info on them that my mom recently gave me that I haven't entered yet into Family Tree maker

The Death of Moses Kerr From James Vawter Kerr Journal, 1872

"Sat. October 26 -- Hitched Cola to hack and went to William Silvers and Mr. Kinnamans and got them to come to witness father's will. Came by and got James Clark. Found Father very feeble. Scarecely able to write his name. Took Clark, Silver, and Kinnaman home again.

Sun. October 27 -- Father very unwell yet.

Mon. October 28 -- Father coughing severely and very weak.

Tues October 29 -- Went to Dr. Cook's and left word with him to come and see Father. Came home and found Father ver bad and Mother and Aunt Jane much alarmed. After dark he seemed so bad that I RAN over to Mr. Clark's and asked him to come and stay with us. He and Sim Prather came soon. Father seemed better. Ceased coughing, rested quietly till 11pm, then became somewhat restless until 1am, 30th. Took his medicine and about 1:30 he ceased to breathe and gently passed away. James Clark went to George Hites but was afraid of the dog and did not get anyone awake. Then he went north and west and soon James Taylor came then William Pavey came then William Shanklin came and brought Clara. Others came. James Taylor took Dick and hack and brought Lizzie from town. Sim Prather stayed with us until others came then he went to Hites and he came ove and stayed a few minutes and started to south and southwest to tell the people. The men sat around and talked till morning without washing or shaving the corpse and I finally to take water, razor, towels, etc. before they would make a move towards it. Only William Pavey, William Hawkins, and James Taylor were here. Then W.H. shaved him. they 3 helped to wash and dress him. W.V. Shanklin started about daylight to town for clothes, coffin, etc. Many friends came in during the day. Newt Gould and George Hite with a little assistance from Henry Snell gathered a load of corn for me. I rested and slept a little during the day. Ira Taylor, C.E. Goodrich, and Keenan came to stay overnight with us.

Thur. Oct 31 -- The boys took breakfast and left and we were alone for awhile. The Rev. Teague came. Then many came. Lon Shanklin brought his double carriage for us and we started in procession about 9:15am and got to the church at 10. Teague preached the funeral. Thence to graveyard, thence to Lon Shanklin's and took dinner. Thence home. Lon came and took carriage and horses back to town. LON WAS VERY GENEROUS AND KIND. Others also."

Hope this is helpful. Let me know what else you might like to have.

Susan
