OUR VETERAN PASTOR NOW 80 YEARS OLD
Rev. M.L. Scheidler, veteran pastor, who has served nearly 60 years in western Wayne county, celebrated his 80th birthday last week. Uncle Monroe, as he is called by his family and close friends, says he has only one regret. "I would like to have made a better contribution to the world and I hate to think of leaving it when we face chaotic conditions." "If I were to wish for anything," the Rev. Mr. Scheidler said, "I would like to see more law abiding citizens, more peace of mind, more co-operation, better living together and more harmony among families, the goal of Christian living." "I like to work with people and thing that with our opportunities we should be able to make this country a better place in which to live. I have all the confidence in our youth and believe that they have the facilities to make America as America should be," the Rev Mr. Scheidler said.

Uncle Monroe is still active. He comes down the stairs like a youngster and enjoys more than anything else, being outside "puttering around" in the garden. During the summer months one need not go into the house to find him for he spends most of his time in his garden. A student of nature as well as a student of the ministry, he has a great love for birds, flowers, trees, and became one of the champion Victory gardeners during the past few years. Gardening was nothing new to the Rev. Mr. Schediler as he always has had a garden. Strawberry culture was one of his prides. "I honestly believe the young people of today miss something by not getting up in time to see the sun rise and hear the birds sing," the Rev. Mr. Scheidler said.

The Rev. Mr. Scheidler last served the Evangelical church in Pershing and the Pleasant Hill church as a regular charge. He gave up that charge in 1934, but has served many times a supply pastor. He says he never turns down a call to serve. One Sunday last month he preached a sermon in Lewisville at the Methodist church. Hardly a month passes but what he does not preach at some church. He also conducts many funerals.

The Rev. Mr. Scheidler was born on a farm in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, north of Cambridge City. He took grade school education at the old No. 6 school in the same community. At the time he graduated from grade school B.F. Wissler, his teacher, and John McPherson, county superintendent of schools, organized a two-year high school course at Germantown. The pastor attended there and then went to North Central college in Illinois. Mr. Wissler, incindentally, later became county superintendent.

The Rev. Mr. Scheidler preached his first sermon at Wares Chapel, 8 miles north of Eaton in the Phillipsburg community. That was in Feb., 1887, before he had been licensed. His first pastoral charge was at Noblesville, Ind. At that time it was the custom of the conference to move single pastors each year, but he stayed two years before being moved to Hicksville, Ohio. There, again he served beyond the conference ruling alloted time. During the fourth year of his ministry he was married and transferred to Dayton where he served the Wayne Avenue church. Then the Rev. Mr. Scheidler came back to Indiana and served at Elkhart, South Bend, Rochester, Urbana, Kokomo, Evansville, Indianapolis, and Pershing. His longest pastorate has been at Pershing where he served 10 years.

Since the death of his wife in 1933, the Rev. Mr. Scheidler has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Raymond Biser, in Mt. Auburn. He has a son Ralph, who makes his home in Indianapolis. Mrs. Luella Cook, his sister, lives at Hicksville but spends the winter months in Burgeston, Pa., with her daughter and son-in-law, Rev. William Flurkey. The latter at one time served in the church in Pershing where the Rev. Mr. Scheidler ended his career as a regular minister. The Rev. Mr. Scheidler has three brothers, Harry at Indianapolis ; Sam S., at San Antonio, Tex., and Moses of Miami, Fla. He intends to leave within the next two weeks for another visit with his 85-year-old brother in Florida. Last winter the Mt. Auburn minister visited in Florida and takes a lot of kidding over his experience with an acre of strawberries.

The minister felt sorry for two men who had been called in the draft. They had an acre of strawberries out. Near the time for picking these berries, a shop worker took over, but finding eight hours in a war plant was about all he could stand, the Rev. Mr. Scheidler put in 100 hours picking berries, averaging from 25 to 30 quarts each evening.
