Monica Barrett, 89, of Dubuque, died at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at home, surrounded by her family. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with Monsignor Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home. She was born on May 28, 1921, in Cascade, daughter of Thomas and Louise (Hardiman) Rogers. She married Martin J. "Slug" Barrett on Aug. 21, 1948, at St. Raphael's Cathedral; he preceded her in death in 1976. Monica worked for the former Dubuque Packing Co. and was a member of the UFCW Local 150A. The best was to describe Monica is to talk about her spunk and playfulness. She was truly a kid at heart, cracking jokes and playing with her great-grandkids. Her smile always made you feel at home and her door was always open, making all who knew her feel like family. Surviving are a son, Michael (Marilyn) Barrett, of Dubuque; grandchildren, Karrie (Paul) Schumacher, of Peosta, Iowa, Kelly (Ben) Houtakker, of Dubuque, and Laura (Kyle) Rimoldi, of Las Vegas; great-grandchildren, Colin Mackenzie, Reese and Caden Schumacher, Brennan and Lucy Houtakker, Amelia and Landon Rimoldi; a sister, Donalee "Donna" (Paul) Northouse, of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by a son, Tom; brothers, Joe, Orval, Melvin, Raymond and Willard; a sister, Mary Gaherty; sisters-in-law, Florence and Mildred Rogers; and a niece, Linda Avenarius. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque, Terry and Sharon Gaherty, her special niece, Diane Rogers, and her nurse, Tara Beitzel, for all their love and support.
