John4 Johnson (Thomas3, Joseph2) was born Nov. 15, 1711; and married Sarah Haynes Nov. 25, 1731. She was born Jan. 9, 1711, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Harriman) Haynes; and died Sept. 20, 1750. He married second Sarah Morse of Hampstead, N.H. Jan. 1751. According to the notes of G. W. Johnson in the N.E. Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol. 34, she was a sister of Lt. Peter Morse. This would make her parents Peter and Thomasine (Hale) Morse, and her birth date about 1731, but there is no such record in Hampstead or Newbury, Mass. John Johnson died Apr. 1, 1762, and his widow married second Samuel Way of Newbury, Vt., and third a Barnard, by neither of whom did she have any children. She died after 1795.

John Johnson moved to Hampstead from Haverhill in 1748, and there at different times he bought 250 acres of land, paying $25,893 for them. The mill privilege at the outlet of Wash Pond was part of his property; but his estate, impaired by depreciated currency, and an inept business partner, was appraised at his death at $16,530. He was very active in local affairs, helping to procure the first charter for the town, and being elected its first
selectman in 174-9. He also served as selectman 1750-51-52 and 1760. He was appointed a magistrate by the royal governor, and was a justice of the peace. In person he was
tall, sinewy, and very strong; and was notable for courage, candor, and sobriety; and he was highly respected.
