MARRIED At the M.E. Parsonage, Wednesday, Nove. 5th, 1879, by the Rev. J.W. Bell, Mr. Miles Hineman and Miss Elizabeth N. [sic] Rowen. Also, at the same time and place, by the same, Mr. Walter Wilson and Miss Mary M. Rowen, all of Tomah.

We knew when we were out electioneering, and found the boys sliding home at all hours of the night, that something was up, although Miles was very enthusiastic, and claimed to be working for the success of the Republican party, we mistrusted some of it was put on. Well, we wish the boys all the good luck imaginable.

OBITUARY Hon. Miles Hineman Dies Hon. Miles Hineman, of Tomah, passed away at St. Francis hospital at La Crosse on Friday afternoon, August 1st, at the age of 78 years. He had been in poor health more than a year, undergoing an operation last year. He returned to the hospital about a month ago, to undgo a still more serious operation, but because of his vitality became exhausted. The funeral services were held from the home under Masonic auspices, Sunday afternoon, and were attended by a large concourse of friends.

Mr. Hineman was engaged in farming during his active years and was prominent in Monroe county affairs for more than forty years. He was elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1915 and was twice re-elected. He was a man of sterling character and excellent judgement, and in every capacity in which he was called upon to render public service he made an exemplary record. His integrity was never questioned and he had the fullest confidence of all who knew him. He was very popular in Monroe county and also among all with whom he was associated in his long and successful legislative career, and his widow and children have the deep sympathy of his host of friends in their bereavement. - From the Sparta Herald Newspaper 8-7-1930

Tomah Journal, 8 August 1930, p. 1, col. 7 M. L. Hineman Passes Away Prominent Tomah Man Succumbs at La Crosse Hospital Following Operation

On Friday, August 1, 1930, an old and well-known resident of this city, Mr. M. L. Hineman, passed away at St. Francis Hospital at La Crosse. Mr. Hineman was born at Dunkirk, Dane County, Wisconsin on November 26, 1851, the son of John and Harriet Carey Hineman. At the age of four years he came with his parents Monroe County, and shortly thereafter his father passed away. He then made his home with his grandfather Carey, where he resided until eighteen years of age. He spent three years of his life working at a Mill at Warrens, and then returned to Tomah and purchased a farm south of Tomah where he lived until about ten years ago. While Mr. Hineman was living on his farm, he taught school for approximately fourteen years and in 1879 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Rowan of Tomah. Mr. and Mrs. Hineman celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in the fall of 1929. Mr. Hineman is survived by his widow, Elizabeth Hineman, and six children, Miles Gardner of Omaha, Neb.; Ralph of Omaha, Neb.; Pearl Bowen of Augusta, Wis., Amy Scott of Augusta, Wis., and Ruby Gerke of Tomah, and Glen Wellyn of St. Thomas, North Dakota. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Rowan and Miss Medora Jordan, both of this city. Mr. Hineman represented Monroe County in the Assembly in 1883 and he was known at that time as the kid of the Assembly. He was re-elected again to the Assembly as representative in 1917 and in 1919 and at that time was the senior member of the Assembly. Mr. Hineman was interested in the Farmer’s Mutual Fire Insurance Company for about twenty-seven years and served as its president for a number of years. He was also a member of the Monroe County Fair Association for approximately the same length of time. He also served upon the County Board representing the Town of Tomah and while a resident of the City of Tomah served on the Common Council. He was one of the original organizers of the Farmers’ Butter Association and managed it for a number of years. During his lifetime, Mr. Hineman was a member of F. & A. M., Royal Arch Chapter O. E. S., and the I. O. O. F. Funeral services were held from the home on Monowau St. on Sunday afternoon, the Masonic burial service being used. Burial was made in the Oak Grove Cemetery. -from Arlyn Bernhardt by email
