Michael McGee's birth date and location are unknown, but he is believed to have been born circa 1730. The first record for Michael is found in Edgecombe County, North Carolina in 1753. He witnessed two deeds for Anthony Head for land along Fishing Creek (Edgecombe Co. NC DB 2, pgs.31-34). Also found in records for Fishing Creek are William, John, and Solomon Magee. William was deeded land there in 1733 and is believed to be the father of John, Solomon, Michael, William, and Ralph Magee.
Michael and William McGee were named as sworn chain carriers on a land survey for Michael Dorman on 19 Sep 1754 in Granville Co. NC (NC Land Grant Images and Data). This is the same 252 acre tract of land that Michael McGee purchased from Mitchell Dorman on 14 Aug 1760 (Granville Co. DB D pgs.15-16). Solomon Magee witnessed this deed. Michael is listed on the 1755 Granville Co. NC tax list as well as the Granville Co. NC List of Taxables for 1762 (The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal 1987. Vol.13, issue 2, p.105). He and his wife Elizabeth sold the 252 acres on Peachtree Creek to Samuel Hendley in 1765 (Warren Co. DB 1 pgs.379-381). Michael purchased 500 acres on the South side of Peachtree Creek (Bute Co. - formerly Granville Co.) from William Hill on 27 Apr 1767 (Warren Co. DB 1 pgs.327-328).
Michael McGee was named as a chain carrier on several land surveys in Granville Co. NC between 1754 and 1762. He sold his 500 acres on Peachtree Creek to George Wren in 1771 (Warren Co. DB 3 pgs.485-486). The next record for Michael is found in Orange County, North Carolina in 1779. In 1779, he was listed on the tax list for Orange Co., witnessed the will of Michael Synott, and was named as chain carrier on at least six land surveys in Orange Co (Bennett, W. D., & Bennett, R. G. (1991). Orange County Records, Volume I X; State Land Grants 1-500). Again in 1780, Michael was named as a chain carrier on a land survey in Orange Co. He was listed on the 1780 List of Taxable Property in Orange County (The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal 1985. Vol.2, issue 3, p.152). Michael's adjoining property was mentioned in a 1782 deed of James Cain. No records have been found for Michael after this date, and no land records have been found for him in Orange County. It is this researcher's understanding that many of the county records for this timeframe were destroyed.
