Yreka Boy Kiled in Air Crash
    Hold Scott Services Tuesday
Funeral services for Merritt Elmer Scott, 26, former Yreka boy who was killed in a plane crash last week, were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church with Reverend [?] E. Malone officiating.
Scott . . . came to Yreka last week to visit his parents, bringing with him his bride of eight weeks . . . .
Scott is survived by his bride, the former Juanita Chestnut of Redding and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Scott of Yreka, and brother Robert H. Scott of Mount Shasta.
The plane which carried Elmer Scott to his death was owned by his brother Robert Scott, who was a novice at flying, had recently started taking lessons at his home in Vallejo.
He was employed as a clerk in the Mare Island Navy Yard, at Vallejo, where he moved after his recent marriage.
Pall bearers were Harold Lange, Lee Lange, Souther Ward, Byon Lewis, C. Leonard and Lloyd Butler.
The interment was at the Evergreen cemetery.

  8. 8.0 8.1 Plane Plunges to Earth As Both Wings Snap Offn (undated news clipping from family files)
email, David Blackwell to Gayel Knott, 4 July 2019.

Elmer Scott, 25, former Yreka boy was killed instantly when the plane which he was flying lost both wings and crashed to the ground a quarter of a mile east of the Montague airport last Saturday afternoon.
Scott was flying a light plane belonging to his brother, Robert H. Scott of Mount Shasta. He was a novice at flying, having had less than fifteen hours of solo flight.
Jerry Andrews, a Los Angeles airplane salesman who witnessed the accident, stated that "when he first noticed the plane circling the airport a little before two o'clock it appeared to be at an altitude of approximately 1800 feet.
"Young Scott then put the plane in a dive and when he attempted to pull the plane out of the dive and level off, I heard a loud snap like a pistol shot and the left wing tore off the plane. A few seconds later the right wing dropped off."
What was left of the plane with the motor racing then carried Scott to his death from the height of about 1500 feet.
When Andrews reached the scene of the crash which was in a field behind the farm home of Charles Gregory on the Montague road, Scott was dead.
The motor of the plane had buried itself 18 inches in the ground. All that was left of the fuselage of the plane was a twisted mass of struts and braces.
One wing and the top of the cabin fell on the west fence of the Gregory farm and the right wing lit on the east fence.
In the opinion of pilots who viewed the crash, Young Scott put too much stress on the wings of the plane when he pulled out of the dive.
The plane was originally built in 1934. Robert H. Scott, brother of the dead flyer, bought the plane last summer, from the Economy Flying club.
It was well within the period of time allowed by the Department of Commerce inspectors; the license would expire this April.
The Civil Aeronautics Authority representative at Oakland was telegraphed immediately after the crash and arrived Sunday to examine the evidence and determine the cause. As yet, no report has been given out.
Elmer Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Scott of 415 Main street, Yreka. He is a graduate of the Yreka high school in the class of 1932.
Scott, who recently moved to Vallejo is survived by a bride of eight weeks, the former Juanita Chestnut of Redding.
The following is an obituary submitted by his family.
Merritt Elmer Scott was born February 14, 1914, near McCall, Idaho. When he was nearing three years of age, he came to California whith his parents, living several years in Little Shasta and later coming to Yreka, where he attended and graduated from the Yreka grammar and high schools. At the age of 19 he joined the army and served two years in the office of Department Headquarters Detachment at Fort Shafter in Hawaii.
Upon returning to the mainland he made an extended tour of the United States, visiting many points of interest in the New England states as well as some places in Canada and Old Mexico.
In January of last year he accepted a Civil Service appointment in the office of the Supply Department of Mare Island Navy Yard. He has lived in Vallejo since that time.
On December 17, 1938, he was married at Redding California, to Miss Juanita Chestnut. They went immediately to Vallejo and made their home there.
Thursday they came north to visit over the week-end with Mrs. Scott's parents near Redding, and his parents in Yreka.
Merritt, since living in Vallejo has been receiving instructions in flying.
Saturday he went up for practice flights in his brother Robert's plane which resulted in his untimely death at the age of 25 year and 28 days.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Jaunita [sic], his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Scott, one brother, Robert, and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Yreka on Tuesday, February 14, at 2:30 p.m.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
