- Active Retirement for Beulah Man
by James D. Canfield Herald Staff Reporter
Weaving is a business with Maurice L. Reed, but it wasn't always. The whitehaired owner of Reedcraft Weavers at Beulah, who now spends his working time attempting to please their mothers, once, paradoxically, spent his working day making children unhappy. In Reed's defense, it must be said that the children brought it all on themselves. A State law requires each child to be exposed to a certain amount of education - and there are "truant" or "attendance" officers hired by each Board of Education to make sure all attend classes. Reed was Attendance officer for the Lansing Board of Education until his retirement in 1952. But he began weaving a long while before that. It was in 1925 that Reed, who had already tried book binding, hide tanning and a variety of other pursuits in a search for a hobby with continuing interest, built his first loom. It was an immediate success as far as he was concerned and he spent hour after hour turning out household articles and gifts for his friends. Weaving didn't become even a part-time business with him, however, until 1942, when he made his first sale and decided he should start, for a change, taking money out of weaving instead of putting it in. He worked during his spare time and summers until his retirement. Reed began vacationing in Beulah some years before he bought the building Reedcraft Weavers now occupies in anticipation of retirement and full-time weaving. He now sells woven goods from his shop-factory, strategically located on M-31 on the north outskirts of his new home town, in Summer and by mail in Winter. Periodically, Reed undertakes more difficult weaving. This year, for example, working on a new 60-inch loom, he began turning out fancy tablecloths. Also included on the groaning shelves and tables of his factory are luncheon cloths, napkins, place mats, runners, chair sets, fingertip towels, purses, pot holders and a variety of other handmade items for the house.
Side by side with the products of his own skilled hands are those of many of his neighbors and friends, such as Indian baskets, which he sells for them. "I love this business," Reed said. "If I had known I was going to enjoy it so much, I'd have retired a long time ago!" It may be a difficult transition from chasing children to pleasing their mothers, but Maurice Reed seems to have made it adroitly - and happily.
- ↑ Former Benzie Resident Dies
Maurice L. Reed, 80, a former resident of Benzie County, died Jan. 10 at his home in Bradenton, Fla. Born in Reeman, he married Ruby Chase of Bear Lake in 1921. She died in 1962 and he subsequently married Jessie Larson of Flint, who died in Oct. 1971. Until retiring as attendance officer in the public schools, Mr. Reed lived in Lansing. He returned to Benzie County in 1952, converting his hobby of hand-weaving into a retail business, Reedcraft Weavers. He was a World War I veteran and member of the Crystal Lake Kiwanis. Surviving are a son, Chase Reed of Merritt Island, Fla., two daughters, Mrs. Lewis Small of Beulah and Mrs. Eugene Morgan of Pittsburgh, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Edith Stoddard of Beulah and Des Moines; and two brothers, Orville of Hillsdale and Herbert of Midland.
