Notes

Info. from the Ambrose genealogy site said his birthdate was 1696 but when I enter that date it shows 1695/96; don't know why. He immigrated on Oct 11 1732 to Philadelphia and was naturalized about Oct 1743 in St. Mary's City, MD. He died on Aug 10 1784 in Frederick Co., MD and was buried in Apple's Lutheran & Reformed Church, Thurmont, Maryland. He was a miller.

Most of the information on the Ambrose descendants was taken from the Ambrose Genealogy Site, Pat Asher...Rootsweb.

MATTHIAS AMBROSE arrived at Philadelphia on October 11, 1732 aboard the ship "Pleasant" from Rotterdam by way of the English customs port of Deal. Ambrose settled first in the Conestoga area of Lancaster County. He was 37 years of age. Most likely he was already married or was soon to be, for we have record in the Muddy Creek Church book of baptisms of four sons born between 1734 and 1741. From the baptism sponsors - Mattheis and Anna Barbara Rossel for son Mattheis in 1739, Johann Friederich Verdries for son Johann Friederich in 1741 and from other facts, it is clear that Ambrose had probably moved on to the Monocacy area (Frederick County, Maryland) , even though Stover's records did not note it, sometime in 1737 or 1738. He would have been nearly 48 when on June 13, 1743 Pastor Candler baptised his daughter Maria Barbara Ambrose. Jacob Weller and his wife Maria Barbaa were this child's Luthern Sponsors. Coincidentally Johannes Weller, who arrived in Philadelphia three months later, was shortly thereafter to marry Mattheis Ambrose's older daughter, Catharine Ambrose. This is only part of an article that I will mail with the wills. Another intresting item in this article is the notation"The gravestone shows Ambrose's birth as February 10, 1690, five years earlier than he claimed on his arrival in the country in 1732. He died August 10, 1784. This I think was quoted from, Holdcrafts, 'Names in Stone'

I have a copy of the will of Mathias Ambrose that was entered on the records of Frederick County MD October 16, 1784. It however does not contain a list of his children, Catherine's will was entered 13th day of October 1807, and does contain her childrens names> Henry, John, Jacob, Ludwick, Mathias. The daughter are listed as Sophia, Catherine, Margaret and Eve. If you would like a copy e-mail me your mailing address, and I will forward you a copy.
