Matthew Alben Taylor= 46th PA Vol.Inf.Co.D; Civil War. Resident of Squaw Twsp., Warren Co., IA since 1866 (1896 Biographical Record of Iowa). See IA Adjutant General Graves Registration and records for M. A. Taylor (same). Shows he enlisted at Harrisburg, PA, age 20 Aug 4, 1861 and discharged from Co. D 46 PA Vol. Inf. as sgt. at Atlanta, GA 12 Sep. 1864; had wife, Mary Lebo; his parents were William and Elizabeth Braught Taylor; their children (with their married names as of 18 Jul 1899); buried New Virginia, IA lot 31 grave 2. That record also states that his obituary was printed in Indianola, IA Herald. See Warren Co, IA Historical Society book, History of Warren County, IA pg. 980 for extensive article on Matthew, including photos. Clearly identifies his parents and children, war record, jobs, and civil duties, etc. The 1870 Census in Warren Co., pg. 439 family and house 107, shows Taylor, Matthew, 28; Mary, 24?; William, 3, and Rebecca, 1 (all born in PA). Child Clarence was born and died in 1868, so this suggests that the family moved to Warren Co., IA around 1867.

Darrell Dickinson data reports that he was a union soldier at battles of Cedar Mtn., VA (where he received a serious gunshot wound that hospitalized him for nearly 8 months before returning to duty), at Gettysburg, GA (where he again was wounded by a shell, but not seriously), at Resaca, Peach Tree Creek, GA. and the seige of Atlanta. His data was obtained from an obituary found in the scrap book of Doris Taylor Dickinson (I presume from New Virginia, IA paper abt. 22 Dec. 1926). This same date is found in the Warren Co., IA History Book 1987.
His obituary says he was born in Dauphin Co., PA 2 jun 1841, died Dec. 21, 1926 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Reed in New Virginia, IA, He was married Oct 12. 1865 to Mary Lebo, also of Dauphin Co., PA and they moved to New Virginia the spring of 1866. It lists their children as Clarence E., dying in infancy, and still living wereWilliam G., Rebecca J., Ada E., Ira, A. ; all of New Virginia; Anna Nora of Bridgeport, NE, Flora Dell of Indianola, IA; two brothers: George W. of Indianola and HIram of Arkansas City, KS. He enlisted at age 20 Aug 1861 in Co. D. 46th PA Vol. and served three years, mustered out Sep. 1864 at Atlanta, GA. (and repeated battle data above). He joined the M.E. church at Mt. Tabor, IA and assisted in building the church at Medford, IA.

Iowa 1885 census Warren Co., Squaw Twp. house 68, family 70 (next door to Charles and Mary A. Braucht who I am not positive I have adequately identified yet) are Matthew Taylor, 44 b. PA; Mary A., 29; Wm. G., 18, Rebecca, 15; Ada E., 12; Ira A., (no age recorded); Anamora, 5; and Flora, 3. I think the recorder errored ten years for Mary A. (should have been 39). Iowa 1895 Census Warren Co. Roll 239 House and family 174 Squaw Tsp shows Matthew A. Taylor, 53, b. PA; Mary, 50, b. PA; Nora, 15, b. PA; Della, 13 b. Warren Co. (all these children and parents listed as Methodist); and Newt Anderson, 31 born Warren Co. NOTE. the ages of Nora and Della suggest a two year period that this family may have moved from PA to Warren Co, IA. (approx.1880-83). See Biography and photos from Warren Co., IA History 1987 Item F1050 showing M.A. Taylor in Union uniform and another showing him c.1915 at Warren Co., IA after his wife died.
