Norma Tucker, Colonial Virginians and Their Maryland Relatives (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1994, for Clearfield Co., Inc.), 167-69: Matthew's will, probated 25 March 1782, Fauquier County and witnessed by Thomas Smith, Joseph Smith and James Key, named Minor Winn, brother James Smith, wife Martha and the following children: William, Joseph, James, Jean.


1781, 22 Oct: Matthew SMITH received one black slave named Frank from Augustine SMITH's estate, Fauquier Co., VA. Matthew Smith's will dated 25 Nov 1781, proved 25 Mar 1782, Fauquier Co., VA.

1781, 25 Nov: Matthew SMITH wrote his will. Loving son William to receive my gun and a horse and saddle when he comes of age. Loving son Joseph to receive a horse and saddle when he comes of age. Loving son James to receive a horse and saddle when he comes of age. Each horse and saddle to have equal value of 10 pounds hard money. Loving wife Martha to receive remainder of estate, real and personal, during her widowhood. In the event she should marry, estate, except one negro girl, Luce, to be equally divided among my three sons that they may be sent to school as circumstances permit. Executors, wife Martha, brother James SMITH, and Minor WINN. Wits. Thomas SMITH, Joseph SMITH, James KEY, Feathergill ADAMS.

(3b) 1782, 25 Mar: Will proved by oaths of Joseph and Thomas SMITH, Fauquier Co., VA. James SMITH granted probate. (3c) 1782, 28 Oct: James SMITH, guardian of William, Joseph and James SMITH, orphans of Matthew SMITH, dec'd, gave bond for 2,100 pounds. Security Tilman WEAVER, William SMITH. (3d) 1805, 24 Oct: Division of Matthew SMITH's estate. Each of his three sons, William SMITH, Joseph SMITH and James SMITH, received slaves valued to 125 pounds each, total noted $435.00. Recorded 22 Sep 1806. (3e) 1812, 22 Jun: Final accounting of Guardian's Account of Matthew SMITH estate. The running account for several years reveals that apparently the guardian and one of the executors, James SMITH, had moved to Caroline Co., because there is a bill for "returned to Fauquier to qualify as Executor."


Deed book 6, p. 134, Fauquier County, Virginia. William Winn of Craven County, South Carolina appointed his son-in-law, Matthew Smith of Fauquier County, VA his attorney. Matthew Smith had married Martha Winn who was the remaining heiress of Ann Lingan whom William Winn referred to as his former wife. This power of attorney was witnessed by James Winn, Minor Winn Sr.


Colonel William Winn married two times. First Ann Lingan of Baltimore, Maryland about 1753 and they had one daughter, Martha, who married Matthew Smith of Fauquier County, Virginia. He married second about 1764, Rosa Hampton, daughter of John Hampton and Margaret Wade of Fairfax County, Virginia, an aunt of General Wade Hampton.


Colonel William Winn was living at "76," a town and military station in western South Carolina in 1790. He served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, returned to Virginia and moved to Lexington, Kentucky.* Colonel William Winn lived in Craven, now Spartenburg, South Carolina and lastly in Charleston, South Carolina.
