According to oral history, Matilda was raised in Michigan in a French speaking community and moved to Washington State at age 12, where she learned to speak English. School records at the Washington State Archives in Olympia, WA, show that she attended School District No. 9 [Old North School, now Edison] in 1899, in the 5th grade, B Division, Page 4, Line 13, Matilda Pero, age 14, reading 90, spelling 100, mental arithmetic 100, written arithmetic 93, language 96, physiology 95.

1900 US Census, Washington State, Lewis County, Lincoln Creek Precinct, E.D. 134, pg. 2B shows Matilda Pero, niece of Levi Volk, white female age 15, born 3/21/1885 in Michigan, single, at school, could read and write.on page 61.

R. L. Polk & Co.'s Directory of Lewis County, Washington, 1907, shows Tillie C. James, clerk, and Mrs. Harriet James, res. 311 N Tower av.

1910 US Census, Washington State, Lewis County, Centralia W5, E.D. 133, page 170B, line 98, shows Matilda C. James, age 24, born MI, living with husband George, his mother Harriet, and children Elmer L. and Bertha N.

She was a member of Centralia First Christian Church. She appears in an unlabeled photo of a women's group or Sunday School class, probably from the 1940's, in a church scrapbook.

Obituary in Daily Chronicle, 12 March 1976: "Mrs. Matilda C. James, 90, a resident of Lewis County and vicinity for the past 82 years, died Thursday in a Centralia hospital. "She was born March 21, 1885 in Traverse City, Mich., and came to this area from Michigan. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Carden (Bertha) Qualls, Centralia; a son, Larry E. James, Centralia; two sisters, Mrs. William E. (Helen) Beckett, Grand Rapids, Mich, and Mrs. Vernon (Edna) Dunning, Centralia; a brother, L.A. Pero, Centralia; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. "Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 P.M. at Mountain View Cemetery, Centralia with the Rev. Dennis Weaver officiating. "Arrangements are under the direction of Newell-Hoerling's,Centralia."
