Matilda Shue is named in the will of her cousin, Nancy Delzell, who died in 1844, as follows:

3rd. I give and bequeath my black girl Nancy Howlett, after the death of my Mother, to my cousin Matilda Shue, during her the said Matilda's natural life; and at her death, if the said Nancy Howlett is living, it is my will that she shall be free.

If the aforesaid black girl should become sickly or unable to work, while living with Matilta Shue, then it is my will that my Executor pay all necessary expenses for attending on her, or for medicine, provided the amount does not exceed fifty dollars.
