[p 12] State of Kentucky Estill County: SS On this 17th day of July 1832 personally appeared in open Court before me Richard French sole and presiding Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Estill aforesaid now sitting Mathias Horn a resident of the County of Estill aforesaid aged 70 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers and Served as herein stated – That in 1778 he enlisted upon Holston River in Virginia, does not recollect the name of the County at that time, under Captain Riddle [probably Captain Isaac Ruddle sometimes also spelled, Riddle, Ruddell or Ruddel] as he supposes in the Virginia State Troops to proceed to Kentucky to defend it against the Indians & British – That he reached the Fort at Boonesborough in April 1778 – That during that year & part of the year 1779 he was under the Command of Captain Benjamin Logan – that he continued at Boonesborough as a Soldier and Indian Spy till sometime in the year 1779 when he was went under Captain Logan, General George Rogers Clark commanding across the Ohio [River] a campaign against the Indians, took & burnt the Shawnee towns & Piqua towns, that he was at Boonesborough during the Great Siege in 1778 – That he continued at the Fort at Boonesborough & in 1780 he again went on a campaign under General Clark across the Ohio against the Indians – that he was in Captain Bush's Company. That he continued as a soldier at Boonesborough until the close of the Revolutionary War – Except when out upon campaigns or ordered out as Indian Spy or Ranger – the latter part of the time he was in Captain Holder's Company. That he has no written evidence in his possession of his Services – that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to any pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. [Samuel Kelly [?], a clergyman, and Joseph Proctor2 gave the standard supporting affidavit: "and the said Proctor states that he has known said Horn since a boy – that he lived with his father, enlisted with him under Captain Riddle & has known him ever since & knows his statement is true."]
[p 7: On June 4, 1839 in Estill County Kentucky, Susan Horn, 77, filed for a widow's pension under the 1838 act stating that she is the widow of Matthias Horn, a revolutionary war pensioner; that she married him in Fayette County Kentucky in 1782; that she knows of no record of her marriage or the ages of her children; that she understands that the clerk's office in Fayette County Kentucky was consumed by fire about the year 1806 and that any records there relating to her marriage would have been destroyed in such fire; that her husband died January 30, 1834 and that she remains his widow. She signed her application with her mark.]
[p 17] The deposition of Aaron Horn3 taken this 15th day of July 1839 at his own house in the County of Madison Kentucky to be used as evidence in favor of the application of Mrs. Susanna Horn for a pension under the act of Congress passed July 7, 1838. Deponent being Seventy Seven years old Deposeth and Saith that he is the Brother of Matthias Horn deceased and was at the wedding when the said Matthias was married to his now surviving widow Susanna Horn the said marriage took place in the County of Fayette in the State of Kentucky in the Summer of 1782 the deponent was present at the wedding and well recollects that the said Matthias & Susanna was married by a Parson by the name of Rucker and further saith not. [p 18] The deposition of William Horn taken this 16th day of July 1839 in the Town of Estill Kentucky to be used as evidence in favor of the application of Mrs. Susanna Horn for a pension under the act of Congress passed July 7, 1838 Deponent being Seventy-four years old Deposeth and Saith that he is the Brother of Matthias Horn Deceased and was at the wedding when the said Mathias Horn was married to the aforesaid Susanna Horn and knows that said Mathias and Susanna was married by the Reverend Mr. Rucker in the County of Fayette and State of Kentucky in the Summer of the year 1782 and that said Susanna has remained a widow ever since the death of the said Mathias Horn And further saith not. [p 4: On January 19, 1842 in Randolph County Missouri, the widow applied for the transfer of her pension benefit to the Missouri agency stating as her reason for removing to Missouri is that her children were about to remove there and she depends on them for support. She signed this document with her mark.]
[Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $80 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for service as a private for 3 years in the Virginia service. Mathias Horn was the son of Arron Horn and Elizabeth (unknown) Horn. Arron Horn, Sr. is said to have died at Ft. Boonesbourgh in 1778.
