Mathes was born at Greifenmühle which he later inherited and which stayed in the family until 1588. Greifenmühle (also called Angermühle) was probably the mill that, according to a document of 1274, was raised next to a monastery and the St. Martin church. The mill had to pay tax to the monastery. The building of the monastery was evidently destroyed during the Saxon Brethren War (1445-1451) and rebuilt by means of gifts from the consort of Friedrich the Meek. Even though the mills are not mentioned anywhere after the reconstruction, it had to pay tax to the monastery. It was also an independent manor. In 1499 the mill hd to pay 4 gulden and 10 hens in tax to the Kartåuser monastery. In 1545 after an intercession of Martin Luther, the electoral prince Johann Friedrich sold the monastery for 1300 gulden to Luther's brother-in-law, Hans von Bora. The purchase document to von Bora was dated "Friday after Ascension Day 1545". In 1560 von Bora sold the property to Hans von Weissenbach and since then it has been known as the Rittergut Monastery.
