Young(Jung) was born in Neunkirchen, Trier, Prussia on July 25, 1826, and arrived in America on October 29, 1842. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1850. Jacob died on November 13, 1907; he was buried at Bloomington, Illinois. According to notes by Florence Schultz Hooker, his granddaughter, "Father Jacob B. Young was a resident of Bloomington for over 30 years. In 1860, his health failed, but five years later he took up the work [evidently the ministry] again and had appointments at Appleton, Missouri; Concordia, Liberty, Weston, Leavenworth, all in Kansas; and Beardstown, Illinois. He then retired and had a grocery store in Bloomington for 13 years. He built his home next door and lived with Sarah until his death. was of sound mind until his death. He died working. He went to the conference, took a bad cold which settled on his lungs. The night he died, he talked as usual and walked about the room by himself just before he died. Sarah, Frank and his wife were with him."
