Facts and Events
JOHANNES FRIEDERICH GEORG SCHULZE AND CAROLINE MARY YOUNGJohannes Friederich Georg Schulze (The Rev. George John Schultz), the eldest child of Friederich and Rosine, was born December 23, 1846, at Berndorf. He attended Lawrence University at Appleton, (Missouri or Wisconsin?), then attended college at Warrenton, Missouri. After that, he taught school near Liberty, Missouri. In 1869, he received an "Exhorter's License," licensing him to preach. He assisted his father-in-law in his large parish at Cameron and Liberty, Missouri. Then he was a minister of the West German Conference, and subsequently received his first church appointment at Walthena, Kansas. He was ordained a Deacon at St. Joseph, Missouri in 1871. (See his further career below.) Died November 3, 1916, Los Angeles Caroline Mary Young was born November 4, 1851 at Janesville, Wisconsin to John Jacob Young, a minister, and Sarah Van Ben Schoten. Jacob B. Young (Jung?) was born in Neumbirgen, Prussia, July 25, 1826, and arrived in America on October 29, 1842. He was converted (from what?) in 1844 and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1850. Jacob died on November 13, 1907; he was buried at Bloomington, Illinois. According to notes by Florence Schultz Hooker, his granddaughter, "Father Jacob B. Young was a resident of Bloomington for over 30 years. In 1860, his health failed, but five years later he took up the work [evidently the ministry] again and had appointments at Appleton, Missouri; Concordia, Liberty, Weston, Leavenworth, all in Kansas; and Beardstown, Illinois. He then retired and had a grocery store in Bloomington for 13 years. He built his home next door and lived with Sarah until his death. was of sound mind until his death. He died working. He went to the conference, took a bad cold which settled on his lungs. The night he died, he talked as usual and walked about the room by himself just before he died. Sarah, Frank and his wife were with him." Sarah Van Ben Schoten was born in New York on November 30, 1824, and she died on October 23, 1902 at Bloomington, Illinois. Her mother (name?) was born on November 25, 1803 and died on July 15, 1884 in Bloomington. She and Jacob had eight children: Mary Carolina, born November 4, 1851, Platterville, Wisconsin; Bertha, born August 15, 1853 at Hazelgreen, Wisconsin, died July 2, 1913; Sarah, born September 6, 1855, Washington County, Minnesota, died in Los Angeles at the Pacific Home; George Durbin, born November 1857 in Monroe, Jasper County, Iowa and died August 8, 1875 at Bloomington, Illinois; Frank Eddy, born November 14, 1859 at Peoria, Illinois; Martha Jane, born November 25, 1861 at Bloomington, Illinois; Hattie Ella, born August 17, 1864 at Bloomington, Illinois; and Frank Olin, born February 21, 1867 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. (Florence Schultz Hooker notes that the name Cameron appears on the Van Ben Schoten side of the family.) Caroline married George Schultz on November 11, 1869, in Keamy, Clay County, Missouri. They moved to ten locations in Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado before settling on the West Coast, where she served churches with her husband in Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Stockton, Berkeley, and San Pedro. Reportedly a social leader, dedicated churchwoman, and talented worker, she was the mother of eight children--Edward Arthur (Ted), Clara Lilly, Florence, Olive (Ollie), Matilda, Gilbert (died as an infant), Melita Rose (Dotty), and Luella Lenore (Lou). Died June 26, 1929 References
