Descendents of Little Turtle and William Wells
By sandy stewart January 09, 2009
Jane Wells Griggs was born in 1810 and William Wells was married to Polly Geiger at that time. Jane was adopted by William Wells's older daughter Ann Turner, and in family letters the four children by William Wells and his first wife all agree that Jane was William Wells's daughter. So he did have two wives at the same time. Also the US Gov't recogonized Jane Wells Griggs as William Wells's daughter.
Second fact:
In the book titled "Indian Blood" by Richard Pangburn he writes on page 521" William Wells first wife was Anahquah, a sister of Little Turtle, the great Miami chief. Their children included Ann ( Ahpezzahquah), who married Dr. William Turner; Rebecca( Pemesahquah), who married Captain James Hackley; Mary( Ahmahquauzahquah), who married Judge James Wolcott; William Wayne Wells and Samuel G. Wells
" After the death of his first wife, William Wells married Little Turtle's daughter, Sweet Breeze(Wahmangopath). Their children included Juliana(who is supposed to have died in infancy) and Jane Turner Wells who married John H. Griggs."
Third fact:
Written by Miami Circuit Court Judge Hal Phelps
Mr .Phelps was also the founder of the Miami County Museum and the Miami County Historical Society
A Trip to Fort Recovery, Ohio, from Peru, Ind., With Decsendants of Chief Little Turtle and Captain William Wells, Aug. 30, 1936.
"As I have been to Fort Recovery a couple of times, the thought occurred to me that it would
be enjoyable to take decsendants of Chief Little Turtle and Capt. William Wells to visit the Fort.
On Sunday August 30, 1936 I called at the home of Evan Lininger on West Sth St., Peru, Ind. and
he and his family and myself made the drive. We drove by the way of Marion and Montpiliar to the Fort it was 94 miles and we returned by the way ofPortland and Hartlford City, Marion and on home."
"Evan Lininger married Rachel Griggs. They have two children: Patricia about 10 years old and Evan Jr. about 3 years old. And through the Griggs's family they are legal decsendants of Chief Little Turtle and Captain William Wells. Their genealogy runs thus:
lst generation. Chief Little Turtle that defeated the American Army at Ft. Recovery, 1791, The Chiefs only daughter;
2nd generation, ChiefMan-wen-go-patha or Sweet Breeze married Caps. William Wells. {Capt. William Wells married for his first wife Chief Little Turtles youngest sister and had issue by this marrage some are living and he married the said Sweet Breeze for his second marriage.
For his third marriage he married a white woman but by this marriage he had no issue.
3rd generation, By this marriage they had a daughter Jane T. who married John Griggs of Fort Wayne Indiana. He founded the presybertian church there, came to Peru, in a early day and is given credit with operating the first factory here, a hat factory .He was later court bailiff and Justice of the peace. They had a number of children one named, Charles Griggs."
4th generation, the said Charles Griggs, Peru Indiana had a number of children, one named Warren, a merchant Taylor at Peru, Indiana.
Sth generation, Warren Griggs married and had a number of children, one named Rachel Griggs.
6th generation, the said Rachel Griggs married Evan Lininger Peru, Ind. The said Evan Lininger had a sister, that in the beauty contest became Miss Ind. and Miss Universe the 12th. Rachel and Evan Lininger has 2 children Patricia and Evan.
The said Jane T. and John Griggs are buried in Mount Hope cemetery Peru, Ind.
An undated newspaper clipping from a "Peru Twenty-five Years Ago" column states "Squire John H. Griggs, one of Peru's most respected citizens, died July 25, 1880"
I also found in Hal Phelps journal some interesting tidbits. Hal Phelps was the founder of the Miami County Museum and the Miami County Historical Society; was Miami County Circut Court Judge and was a journalist. He wrote virtually every day about what he did for a number of years of his life. On
30 Aug 1936, from a transcription of his journal you find the following:
So here's what I have 2 noted historians Jacob Dunn and Calvin Young who both say Jane Turner Wells Griggs is the daughter of William Wells and Sweet Breeze.
I also have Tipton's papers and he knew and lived by the children of William Wells and he says that Rebecca
Wells was the neice of Little Turtle, not granddaughter. Tipton was an agent of the US Gov't.
Griggs family have in their possession the silhouette of Sweet Breeze, that her family donated to the Chicago History Musuem.
I think I have all I need to conclude that Jane was the daughter of William Wells and Sweet Breeze.
