Gravestone: "Died of the Canker Fever"

"In Salisbury, Sept. 22 of the Canker Fever, Mrs. Mary, wife of Capt. Reuben Wardwell, 46. She lingered with that complaint about four months, with Christian patience and fortitude. This dear and ever affectionate woman was educated to believe in the doctrine of endless misery - but God, who is gracious and full of mercy, delivered her mind from this distressing idea and gave her a cheering hope, that the human family were ransomed by our Redeemer, and will, of course, eventually be recovered into the habitation of the blest, where sorrow, sighing and distress will be no more." -New Hampshire Patriot & State Gazette 10 October 1836
