"The Eatonton Messenger chronicles the death of Mr. George W. Wardwell. Mr. Wardwell was for many years a leading business man of Eatonton, and one of the foremost citizens. He had a large heart for charity, a vast amount of energy and enterprise, and possessed a fund of humor that was the delight of his friends. He was well known in Savannah, and his business connections extended in one shape and another all over the country. His death will be deeply deplored wherever he was known." -Atlanta Constitution 31 January 1883
