Mary's early years were spent in Niagara Falls area and her family moved to Easton, Maryland when she was 16. When Mary and Tom first came to Nebraska, they lived in a small community that was named Tufford after her family. She became the first postmaster there. According to her obituary, after they moved to Nebraska, there was a three year period in which they lived in Colorado, but when that was is unknown.
