Note on birth year: There is some question as to the year of Mary’s birth. Her death certificate lists the date of birth as 5 Feb 1838 in Chautauqua, New York, USA. The U.S. 1880 Census lists Mary’s age as 48 (suggesting a birth year of 1832), and Peter’s as 43. This is somewhat suspect because this is the only record that shows Mary as being older than Peter. There is a possibility that the record-keeper should have recorded “38” instead of “48,” beacuse most other sources show Peter being approximately 3-5 years older than Mary. In the 1900 Census Mary’s age is listed as 57, with her birthday as Feb 1843, and Peter is listed as age 62, born June 1837, a five-year differential. The 1910 Census shows Mary’s age as 70 (suggesting a birth-year of 1840), and Peter’s age as 73.

In any case, at this point we have several potential years of birth for Mary, 1832 (per suspect 1880 census), 1838 (per death certificate), 1840 (per 1910 census), 1842 (assuming “38” for 1880 census), and 1843 (per 1900 census). One thing is certain, it appears that she was born before 1843, and likely after 1838.

There is additional evidence pertaining to the year of Mary’s birth. In the marriage record for Mary and Peter, which shows marriage on 27 December 1857, Mary lists her age as 17. This would suggest a year of birth of 1840. It is possible that Mary lied on this record and was in fact younger at the time (17 was the required age for marriage). However it is unlikely that she put a younger age then she was at the time, and as such this would further constrict the potential date range of Mary’s birth, to approximatley 1838-1843.
