Nearly all sources suggest a year of birth of 1837. However it is noted that the marriage record suggets a year of 1836, as Peter listed his age as 21 in 1857. It is important to note, though, that 21 was the required age for a man to get married in West Virginia at that time. Therefore it is entirely possible (and was commonplace) that Peter lied about his age in order to obtain approval for the marriage. As such, the year 1837 will assumed to be Peter’s year of birth.
