  4. Sources seem consistent that the widow of Jonathan Gale Jr., nee Polly Stephens, married Samuel Williams, except Source:Allred, Marilyn. Town of Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Genealogical Records 1739-1900, Births, Marriages,, which raises the possibility it was Jonathan's sister Polly Gale that married Samuel Williams [p. 265: Polly Stevens m.(int.) 11 Sep 1802 Jonathan Gale; p. 303: Samuel Williams m. 1808 Polly Gale, first child born "Barnardston" 19 Sep 1808; p. 110: Polly Gale either m. 1798 Martin Stevens or m. 1808 Samuel Williams; Jonathan Gale m. 11 Sep 1802 Polly Stevens). The two marriages offered for Polly Gale clearly reflect the uncertainty of Allred's arrangement, but this still doesn't reconcile the contradictory data. Source:Gale, George. Gale Family Records in England and the United States : To Which Are Added the Tottingham Family of New England, and Some Account of the, p. 87, which appears to have corresponded with Jonathan's nephew Amory, says Jonathan Gale Sr. (i.e., the father) d. 29 Jan 1808 and Jonathan Gale Jr. (i.e., the husband) moved to Maine and d. 28 Oct 1808, having married 1822 [would seem to clearly be a typo for 1802] Polly Stephens. But the marriage of Samuel Williams to Polly Gale is in a list of marriages performed in 1807, and the birth of their child is given as 19 Sep 1808 (by Allred, no record found in Bernardston, recorded in Northfield) is not consistent with her first husband not dying until 26 Oct 1808.

A Franklin deed shows Allred is wrong, that Polly Stevens m. Samuel Williams, and since she married him with name Polly Gale, must have first married Jonathan Gale. Vol. 37, p. 51 21 Mar 1815: Samuel Williams, Polly Williams, Benjamin Conant, Betsey Conant, Ezra Connable, Anna M. Rich and Esther Stevens Children and Heirs at Law of Wilder Stevens and Elizabeth his wife for $600 quitclaim to Joseph Stevens of Warwick all right in several parcels in Warwick the property of Elizabeth Stevens formerly owned by Joseph Mayo of Roxbury deceased. [Wilder had not yet died but appears to have turned his farm over to his son Joseph.]

The discrepancy is the date of Jonathan's death and Polly's remarriage suggests the death date was incorrect, but the correct date has not been located, but Jonathan's father, in his will of 11 Jan 1808, did not name Jonathan or any heirs of Jonathan..
