- ↑ Source:Allred, Marilyn. Town of Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Genealogical Records 1739-1900, Births, Marriages,, p. 252, shows a birth of "b. 1783". Both the death record and the gravestone indicate an age at death of 85 which works out to 1774, making it appear that Allred's birth is either a miscalculation or a guess. The latter case would presumably be based on the fact that the recorded age at death would place the birth before the parents married in 1776. Normally burial in Warwick is shown in Allred's book with the age at death in parentheses (e.g., see the entry for Mary's husbands) and this is not done for Mary, as if Allred suppressed this confusion for simplification, but her assertion should have been explained to the reader, since it appears to hide an issue without helping the reader understand the basis for her assertion. First, ignoring the age at death, there would be several other years that could be chosen besides 1783 (1778 for example), so her choice appears arbitrary, and probably wrong [based on the age of her husbands (1772 and 1774) and date of first marriage (1794 - age 11?), and 1800 census showing wife of Jesse Gale having age 26-44 (with no children providing estimate of marriage date)]. Secondly, if the age is correct, it implies Abner had an earlier wife, or Mary's father is a different Abner Smith. Since Allred provides no precise birthdates for Mary or any of her siblings, it does not appears she relied on a family Bible or similar source that we don't have access to.
