    Vol. 1, p. 106.

Marrage is Intended Between Abner Smith of Warwick in the county of Hampshire and Marcy Goddard of Athol in the county of Worcester Octob'r the 25 : 1776.

  2. There is great difficulty identifying the husband and wife. As is explained below, there are three marriage records, but two of the wives, including Marcy/Mercy/Marey Goddard, have not been identified.

Possibly this is Abner's second marriage out of three? There are many Abner Smiths, and it seems like this one is the Abner Smith of Athol, Warwick and Orange, but could they be multiple men? There appears to be an additional Abner Smith of New Haven-Northampton-Murrayfield (later Chester) with wife Ruth and his son Abner of Southampton with wife Abigail; and there is an Abner Smith of Shutesberry who had a wife Rebecca whose son may be the Abner of New Salem; possibly an Abner Smith of Springfield, and his son who possibly is the one who moved to Derby, CT; and there is an Abner Smith of Ashfield, plus some labelled of other towns, who may or may not be the same as those listed above. Thus there is great difficulty separating the deeds recorded in Hampden County until 1787 and then Franklin County after that (none found in Worcester where Athol is).

In Athol, an Abner Smith m. 1771 Jerusha Hutchins, d/o Edward Hutchins and Lydia Pierce (Genealogy of Thomas Hutchins p. 95, also p. 106). It is also said that Abner Smith's wife "Molly" d. 3 Mar 1815 in Orange age 62 (born about 1753, e.g., see Find A Grave). Molly is not in any way typically connected with the name Jerusha, and rather than a nickname of Jerusha as seems to be the favorite guess of secondary sources, the name discrepancy may indicate a remarriage. If the daughter Mary was actually born 1774 [see the discussion of this controversy on her page ], Abner needs an earlier marriage than Marcy Goddard to allow such a birth, and the marriage to Jerusha may be it.

Marcy and Marey can be almost indistinguishable in colonial handwriting, so it is possible that this Molly may be the same person named in the intentions read as Marcy Goddard, and assumed by Allred to mean Mercy, but possibly Marey, which could have a nickname of Molly. One DAR lineage identifies her as Molly Hutchens, but this could be some more conflation of Molly with Jerusha Hutchins.

It is believed that Abner married third Lydia Harvey (int. in Warwick 1 Sep 1815, Vol. 1, p. 202). Abner Smith of Warwick in 1817 executed two deeds with a wife named Lydia. Unfortunately none of the earlier deeds identify the wife, and no probate has been found to list his children (it is not known where or when he died, although one DAR lineage claims he died in "Holland Purchase, NY").

The following Franklin County deeds are presumed to all belong to one man, Abner Smith of Athol-Warwick-Orange, since matching of properties comes pretty close to accounting for purchases and sales of each piece of property. What happened to Abner Smith after he apparently sold his remaining real estate in Franklin county, in 1817, is unknown, as are his origins and parents.
