Mary Burton Ruland is NOT the daughter of John Ruland and Margaret Batway of New York and La Crosse County, Wisconsin. That Mary Ruland is clearly listed as "Mary E. Ruland" in the 1850 Census in Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio, with her parents. She is also listed as "Mary Thomas", widow, in the 1880 Census in Hamilton, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, living with her parents, so this could NOT be the same person, as Mary Burton Ruland who was having children with Isaac Weaver Zent bet. 1868-1876, and was listed in the 1880 Census in Oakland, Alameda County, California. [could not be in both census records in 1880].
Mary Burton Ruland is a PROVEN child of John Ruland (1810-1891) of Hemstead, Queens County, New York and his first wife "Delia", who died prior to the 1850 Census in 1849. Mary's children Isaac "Chase", Mable and Ida are named as grandchildren in the Estate records of John Ruland.
According to the 1880 Census, Mary Ruland's father was born in England [appears to be incorrect] and her mother was born in Louisiana. In 1881, Mrs. Mary B. Zent was listed in the Oakland City Directory as living in the "Ross House", which was a 42-room hotel, owned by Charles Cutter [in the mid-1880's], where transients and homeless were known to live. Also listed with Mary B. Zent was a "Miss Mary M. Zent". also listed as living in the Ross House, the identify of which is currently unknown.
